Beautiful Losers charts the careers of a loose-knit group of multi-disciplinary artists who were (and still are) influenced by skateboarding, punk, graffiti and hip-hop. The group innocently began their work back in the eighties and they each still manage to make art with the same undefiled approach for the mainstream market.
The documentary combines retro-footage with contemporary interviews against an original soundtrack by Beastie Boys producer Money Mark. The motley bunch, including; Mike Mills, Shepard Fairey, Margaret Kigallen and Ed Templeton explain their cultural inspirations from the point when they first began 'making junk', to place where they're at now; as thirty and forty-something year olds.
Director Aaron Rose meshes hand-held footage and clever editing to make an edgy aesthetic which mirrors the artist's views and lifestyles perfectly. It's all this and a complete lack of pretension, with a whole lot of heart, that makes Beautiful Losers both endearing and inspired.
