Music in the Brain E-mail

sacksAuthor and Nuerologist Oliver Saks is somewhat of a legend in my eyes. I love him. Robin Williams loves him too , having played his character in the true story Awakenings.

My obsession started after reading The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat, a book which chronicles his real life encounters and diagnosis of patients troubled by phantom limbs, hallucinations and other quirks of the brain.

Musicophilia uncovers the mystical workings of music in the brain. Want to find out why Beyonce's songs get stuck in your head? Or wondered why you haven't yet become a musical genius? Then dig into this.

Best of all, there's no mumbo jumbo medical terms to puzzle over. Just great tales of fantastical musical hallucinations and paranoias.

Joy Division E-mail

ian-curtisGrant Gee’s documentary Joy Division, celebrates the legendary Manchester post-punk band fronted by the late Ian Curtis.  The story is told with triumph, humour and sadness through honest and intriguing interviews with the bands three surviving members Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris.  Also included are conversations with record producers, photographers, Tony Wilson (of course) and an emotional recount of life and love with Ian from his lover, Annik Honore.  The Manchester city back drop is at times breathtaking and rare live performances exhilarating.

Joy Division will be playing at the Rooftop Cinema February 19.  If you are a musically minded but Melbourne challenged person, visit your local video store… I dare you not to shed a tear.

Cookies that salute KISS? Pure genius. Draw inspiration from this creative baker by making some of your own glam rock biscuits. You can doodle Gene Simmons onto edible rice paper and place them on warm cookies, or just use some normal paper and remove before eating. Please remember that part.

275g (1 cup) crunchy peanut butter
200g (1 cup, firmly packed) brown sugar
1 egg
260g (1 3/4 cups) plain flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
110g (3/4 cup) unsalted peanuts, roughly chopped

2. Beat the butter and peanut butter in a mixing bowl until creamy. Add the brown sugar and beat until pale. Add the egg and beat until combined.
3. Sift the plain flour and baking powder together. Use a wooden spoon to mix the dry ingredients and peanuts into the peanut butter mixture.
4. Roll tablespoonfuls of the mixture into balls and then flatten each of them onto the tray. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden and cooked through.
5. Decorate them with Gene Simmons faces!!
