Tim Flemming is the Founder, creator, mastermind and cult leader of Flatland OK, a world where multi-layered objects reflect back and forth between reality and a utopian state.

His pieces slice the moments and things that we may find anywhere or nowhere, in a nightmare or dream. Miss Flatland extends her arm in an eternal welcoming wave, the skull sits atop crossbones in an ominous static state. Evil lays vigil by your bedside and a Suspicious Package lurks somewhere in the corner, as innocuous and mundane as a briefcase full of book-keeping.

And this is the thing about Flatland OK. These seemingly benign ply and mirrored objects attract you in the most primal sense. They take you back to the bare bones of symbols and meaning, like when you're a kid and a shape or colour can make you feel. Flemming has made a world where his own shapes and feelings exist in the flesh and we get to play with them and reconfigure their meaning, taking on the good and bad.

In this age of tawdry mass production and short lived trends, Flemming's work stands apart in its painstaking attention to detail and quality. His are talismanic objects made with love to help you build your world again, this time the way you like it, one piece at a time.

Knitwear with balls. That's how we'd describe the sophomore range from UK design team Sibling. The trio of Sid Bryan, Joe Bates and Cozette McCreery have worked on runway knitwear for the likes of Giles, Alexander McQueen and Jonathan Saunders, and their hard yards have paid off.

An acid colour palette and ominous apocalyptic prints of rats and camouflage are kicked up a notch with a playful accent on sequins and denim mimic finish.

If only all bad boys looked this good.

Future Romance E-mail

yeti 1Thank goodness for Australian fashion’s new romantics. Romance Was Born are the adorable design duo Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales, who are single handedly loosening the purse strings with their colour fuelled and playful collections full of richly textured fabrics, fine tailoring , crochet, tie-dying and bold prints inspired by a true love of Australia, its vibrant characters and diverse landscape.

The past three ranges have seen the label famously collaborate with celebrated Australian Artist Del Kathryn Barton creating an exquisite collection of digitally printed fabrics.  The most recent collaboration The Garden of Eden exhibited in Kaliman Gallery, Sydney showcasing Barton’s new works and 12 one-off designs by Romance Was Born.  Not surprisingly this exhibition was both breathtaking and a complete sell out - the perfect friendship… fine art and fashion…

… and music, Romance Was Born have also been commissioned to dress many amazing, beautiful and talented International and Australian musicians in exclusive one-off rock n roll stage worthy pieces including Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, Debbie Harry, Cyndi Lauper, MIA, those tiny Veronica’s and most recently glow in the dark costumes with an element of puppetry were designed for Melbourne band Architecture in Helsinki.

So what is next for these great romantics??  (1) A Designer of the Year Award presented at L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival this week - Congratulations! (2) Continuing support of the dwindling Australian manufacturing industry with home-grown and home-stitched designs and (3) True love and unquestionable enthusiasm for what they create with imaginations which know no boundaries.  And that is just for starters. What an incredibly inspiring label.
