Cutting Edge Opera E-mail

Danish dance duo The Knife have been enlisted by theatre group Hotel Pro Forma, to create a Charles Darwin themed "electro opera".

Tomorrow in a Year will contain an original music score and libretto for the upcoming production launching on 2nd September.

If Karin Dreijer Andersson's solo side project (Fever Ray) is anything to go by, Tomorrow in a Year should resemble some sort of shimmering wintry ghoul type masterpiece. Yep.

Their Facebook Group is giving away two tickets to Denmark to see the show. Check it.

Felicity Groom E-mail

dn.aspPerth native Felicity Groom has been mesmerizing audiences throughout the country in support of Little Birdy's recent national tour.

A mighty songstress in her own right, Groom's first guitar was a gift from her highschool crush. When they broke up that's when the finger picking and soulful stroytelling began.

Having already lived and gigged throughout Europe, Groom is now building a steady reputation as an Aussie femme fatale to watch. WAMI awards and a Triple J Unearthed status are just the beginning ...

Don't Believe the Hype? E-mail

yyy

There's a swag of much hyped albums scheduled for release in the coming weeks. Some are genuinly exciting, some we're not too convinced about ...

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

New Album: It's Blitz
Release date: April 6th

Karen O and her gang are fucking awesome. However, I'm slightly scared at the thought of Nick Zinner replacing his guitar playing in favour of a more synth based sound.

Release track Zero is - dare i say it - a little disco. Meanwhile previews of other songs such as Soft Shock and Skeletons lean towards the Yeah Yeah Yeahs classic ballad style (Maps, Golden Lion) and Dull Life hints at the punk grunt of their debut album Fever to Tell.

Should be an interesting offering that might require a few extra spins to fully appreciate. Oh and you can get it on iTunes now.

Bat for Lashes

New Album: Two Suns
Release date: April 6

Elfin beauty Natasha Khan first took our breath away with her 2006 release Fur & Gold (which included one of the all time best lounge room dance songs What's a Girl to Do?). Her follow up album Two Suns is being promoted as Natasha Khan's "split personality" offering. Yer, I'm thinking Ziggy Stardust meets Beyonce's Sasha Fierce...?

Let's hope alter-ego "Pearl" (why Pearl? This screams Golden Girls to me) still harnesses the strength of Khan's haunting vocals and mythic stories.

P.S. An exciting development is that legendary recluse Scott Walker will provide vocals on the eery new track The Big Sleep. Have a sneaky listen here.

Grizzly Bear

New Album: Veckatimest
Release date: May 26

The long-awaited follow-up to Grizzly Bear's remarkable Yellow House, is finally coming. The title, (pronounced VECKahTIMMest), is after a small, uninhabited island off the coast of Massachusetts. Cool.

For those who have yet to experience the lush, cavernous echoes of Grizzly Bear, you are in for a sweet surprise. The new album, out on the boundary pushing Warp label, promises to be a lush, haunting forest for you to get lost amongst.

Unfortunately some dickhead has already leaked the CD onto the net. But ignore that! In fact, why not pre-order the vinyl edition here.

Iggy Pop

New Album: Preliminaires
Release date: May 18

And now to something different. Iggy Pop will be releasing a jazz album entitled Preliminaires, as a tribute to Michel Houellebecq's novel A Possibility of an Island.

Mr Pop has recorded a fairly lengthy video (which includes his dog Lucky and some serious vacuuming in the background) about the background of his new project. He explains he's created an album which consists of music he "feels in his soul" when he reads the above mentioned novel.

A surprising, mammoth concept that will hopefully not turn into a Rod Stewart jazz offering.

Pink With Envy E-mail

bigpink2The Big Pink formed over jealousy. Not the usual jealous boyfriend variety, but an envy that stemmed from a record label boss wishing he could be a rock star himself.

Milo Cordell is one half of The Big Pink, and label manager to electro punk Merok Records (home to early releases from Telepathe and Salem). He explained to Clash Music: "I’d never wanted to be in a band before, but then when I started the label I got a little jealous watching all my mates go off and do really well - then we went on tour and it was fucking great".

Since their early touring adventures in 2007, The Big Pink have recently supported larger than life TV on the Radio and gutter garage band Black Acid. Things have turned to terrific since The Big Pink scored a signing of their own, to the shithot 4AD. They also picked up a NME Best New Music Award.

The Big Pink's quasi blend of Aphex Twin, The Breakfast Club and early New Order is about to take off. And we're very, very excited indeed.
